Website for the Vrede van Utrecht. Visual design was done by Utrecht based design company 'Die Twee'

A major project I’ve been working on for the a couple of months is the Vrede van Utrecht site. The Vrede van Utrecht is a cultural institution which organizes art festivals around the theme of war & peace in run-up to the celebration of the historical Treaty of Utrecht in 2013. The visual design was done by the Utrecht based design company Die Twee. Actually it’s not a site but a cluster of sites linked together in a portal structure. Amongst others the cluster includes the sites: Community-art, Wij Zijn 17, Art in War and Kunst van Verzoening. The technical base of the cluster is a wordpress μ installation which functionalities were modified by series of custom plug-ins that I wrote. To me, this site signifies a new approach to web-design that utilizes aspects of the web 2.0 phenomenon in terms of both usability and scalability.

Click here to visit the portal

Not a single site, but a whole series of site clustered in a portal structure. The back-end for the cluster is my very own content management system Royale Deluxe (version 2). Apart from the general sites and the portal sites build for the institute include: C’lick me (together with Graig Kernow), New Networktheory (together with Leon & Loes), MyCreativity (together with Hendrik-Jan Grievink), Urban Screens, The Art & Politics of Netporn (together with Francien Frommé) and Incommunicado (together with Graig Kernow).

Course about the idiosyncracies of interactivity for student graphic design at the AKV St.joost art acedemy in Breda.

Designing for the web truely is something completely different than designing for print. The importance of a good visual design should never be underestimated, but the days in which sites were simple and a graphic designer could safely venture him or her self into the field of web-design have come and gone. The visuals and interface of a website are now just the tip of the iceberg of larger technical systems. A good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the techniques underlying a specific site and those available to the web are paramount in creating solid sites. You can only imagine my joy when I was asked to give a course in visual design for 2nd year graphic design students at the St.Joost art academy in Breda.

website done for Witte de With, center for comtemporary art in Rotterdam.

It turned out to be a long project, but the result made the hard work worthwhile. Together with wijbrand stet I designed the front-end of this rather extensive website. The back-end was programmed by Petra Dreiskämper. A lot of usefull input was given by Ariadne Urlus, responsible for the website over at Witte de With. One of the main features of the site is a dynamically generated menu for related content which ties together the information in the database. A database which holds all of the projects of the Witte de With center for contemporary art in the last 10 years. Recently the Website underwent an thorough update. The original ‘rhizome’-esque interface of the front page was traded for a more standard list view and many small improvements where made to the agenda, particpants-page and project-page.

Exploring the possibilities of Locative Media for telling stories in a course for the AKV St.Joost art acedemy in Breda.

Traditionally a story is told in time. But what happens if a story in told in space? Locative media – media that is aware of it’s location – makes it possible to do so. The minor ‘Locative media and interactive story-telling’ given at the AKV St.Joost art acedemy in Breda, allowed students to explore to possibilities of GPS-devices, mobile phones, Google Earth, etc. Not only at a technological level, but also at a conceptually. Guest teacher for this 7 week course was Information lab’s Auke Touwslager.

This site was done in collaboration with Leon & Loes who were responsible for the visual design and the concept. The ‘petri dish’ on the top of the page is a visualization of the data in the database and the usage of the site. Several aspects can be ‘read’ from the appearance and behavior of the ‘organism’. For instance: If an article is added to a specific section of the site the corresponding ‘organism’ will move more quickly for several days. If a section of the site is not updated for a longer period of time, the corresponding ‘organism’ wil slowly fade away. In a later stage my mailing system ‘mailbooster galore’ was also added to this site.

The Stereo is an indepent art publication which experiments with the process of magazine making. In collaboration with Arjen de Jong and the rest of the stereo crew I’ve made two sites which where used for publications #3 and #5. The sites can be seen as online sketchbooks which assists the collaboration of the artists on a publication and makes the process of collaboration insightfull to both the artists and the audience.

As a part of larger design team I assisted in the development of a re-design of a section of the Funda housing site. The project ran for about a month at the Funda HQ in Amsterdam. Interaction design for the prototype was done by Amsterdam based usability experts User Intelligence. My work focused on the implementation of the wireframes / visual designs in a HTML and Javascript framework.

This project, done for Philips Design in Eindhoven in early 2006, was part of a larger project called Lifestyle Home. It is an exploration of the possibilities of home consumer electronics in a connected enviornment. My work focused on the development of a demo for a digital domestic scrapbook called the media tablet. The demo was done in actionscript.

A content management system that enables users to manage content but also define the structure of the site.

What’s in a name? CMS Royale deLuxe is a content management system that I’ve build in 2005 and that was used for many of the sites that I’ve made. The general idea behind it was to create a customizable framework that would allow me to recycle code and quickly build sites. Apart from enabling users to manage the content it also allows users to create the structure of the site in terms of subsites, pages and items. This turned out to be one a very useful strength. But, as we all know, the web is very dynamic and – sad as it may be – the CMS has become somewhat obsolete.

The Formbuilder Extreme 3000 is an application to build HTML-forms. Building such a form is really a tedious job, it takes forever to get everything to work. And even though form are almost the same, it is hard to recycle the code. That’s why I came up with the idea to make the formbuilder. Why not create something that generates the code for an HTML-form?

By the way, the names are an ironic reaction to all those really weird names that are given to content management sytems.

Graduation project at the Piet Zwart Institute for post-graduate studies and research, SpaceTime is an experimental automatic and continuous diary.

Our memory is flawed. We quickly forget most of our experiences. SpaceTime is an attempt at creating a ‘documented life’ by collecting and structuring the data that flows through one of the most intimate devices of our time: the mobile phone. I constructed a system that automatically and continuously captures the data generated by ordinary use of the mobile phone such as audio recordings of calls, sms’s, images, video’s, news headlines, agenda information and the location of the phone in the network. Consequently, this data is uploaded to a database and organized in a framework of space and time coordinates. Thus creating a diary of personal digital traces of everday life.

SpaceTime was my graduation project for the Piet Zwart Institute for post graduate studies and research in june 2004.

A website that changes appearance every time it is visited, even when the same page is reloaded.

The first real site I’ve ever build. Way back in the days of Netscape, flash 3 and my top-of-the-line ice-blue powermac running at a whapping 300 Mhz. But I still like it. Darwin is a site with ‘genes’, programmed in such a way to make the site change in appearance every time it is visited. Even when reloading the same page many aspects change. Different colors, different lay-out, and even a different sountrack based on a small database of samples. The site, which I build together with Ritske Rensma, (sorry for the link Ritske, but it was the only web-presence I could find :-) was even nominated for the 3rd International Browser Day held in Paradiso, Amsterdam in 2000.
